- /kɒrəl ˈrif / (say koruhl 'reef)
a reef or bank formed by the growth and deposit of coral polyps.
Coral reef ecosystems globally cover less than one per cent of the world's ocean volume. Nevertheless, that small percentage supports more than a million known species, more than a quarter of all marine species. Because coral reefs have specific requirements of salinity, temperature and clarity, any assault on these conditions can have devastating effects. In the 1998, 2004 and 2010 El Niño events, the temperature of the ocean rose well above normal and many reefs were bleached or killed. Another threat is the increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which dissolves in the oceans producing carbonic acid and resulting in ocean acidification. This reduces the calcification of corals or enhances their dissolution. Australia's Great Barrier Reef is the longest coral reef structure in the world; its biggest threats are ecosystem outcomes of climate change, agricultural run-off and the crown-of-thorns starfish.
